What Is IT Asset Disposition (ITAD)?
Most organisations think carefully about IT equipment when they buy it, and barely at all when they retire it. But the moment a laptop, server or phone reaches the end of its working life is the moment it becomes a liability: a device that may still hold recoverable data, that carries environmental obligations, and that represents value the business has stopped using.
IT Asset Disposition, almost always shortened to ITAD, is the discipline that deals with that moment properly.
What ITAD means
IT Asset Disposition is the certified, documented process of retiring end-of-life IT equipment in a way that protects data, recovers value where possible, and meets environmental and regulatory obligations at every stage.
The “certified and documented” part is what separates ITAD from simply throwing equipment away. A proper ITAD process produces evidence, usually an itemised certificate for every device, that each item was handled correctly.
ITAD is best understood as an umbrella. Underneath it sit the specific services that do the actual work: secure data destruction, certified data erasure, responsible recycling, refurbishment, and IT asset resale and value recovery.

How ITAD differs from recycling
A common and costly misunderstanding is that ITAD is just a formal word for recycling. It is not, and that is the whole point.
General IT recycling is about the physical material: recovering metals, keeping waste out of landfill. It does not, on its own, address whether the data on a device was securely destroyed, whether the process is documented, or whether any value was recovered for the owner.
ITAD includes recycling but goes much further. It treats a retired device as three things at once: a data risk to be neutralised and certified, a potential source of recoverable value, and regulated waste to be handled responsibly. The difference between handing equipment to a recycler and engaging an ITAD provider is, in large part, the difference between hoping a device was handled correctly and being able to prove it was.

Because ITAD is fundamentally about trust, you are handing another organisation your data-bearing equipment, the choice of provider matters more than the price. Reasonable things to look for:
- Recognised accreditations, such as EN-15713 (secure destruction), ISO 9001, ISO 14001, and data-specific credentials like Blancco-certified erasure.
- An itemised certificate of erasure or destruction for every device, not a single blanket statement for a whole collection.
- A clear chain of custody, with vetted personnel and traceable collection from start to finish.
